Wild horses still roam parts of Alberta and this scene is imagined in the foothills of the Rockies.

The artist, Nadina Mackie, grew up in northern British Columbia on a mountain cattle ranch, not so far from this region. She and her family rode small, rugged mixed breed horses who spent most of their lives on the open range.

It is a harsh yet beautiful life.
